Smile Today

I've never seen a smiling face that was not beautiful.

Hey guys! You may have seen some negative feedback/comments about my tattoo, so I’d like to clear the air a bit here.
Suum cuique (yes, with the u) is the motto of Prussia and holds the meaning of “to each his own”. The words themselves don’t exactly reflect this sentiment, so I made the artistic decision to change it slightly.
I took some artistic liberty with the spelling- I’m not going to just copy some phrase exactly on my body. This isn’t for Latin or even for Prussia- it’s for me and that’s it, like anyone’s tattoo. And, since I greatly disliked how it looked with the extra “u”, I removed it and made it my own. To each his own, and it’s (thus) spelled unusually. Not due to a mistake, not due to me being careless. It was a long pondered decision and means an immeasurable amount to me.
Please keep this in mind when regarding my (and anyone’s!) tattoo: To each his own. If it makes the person happy and means a lot to him or her, please respect that and be supportive or silent.

I absolutely love this piece. Its so vibrant. I totally agree with the idea of changing the language to fit your aesthetic, too. We do it all the time in speech and writing even with English. Anyone who disagrees with this should go read Wittgenstein and Shakespeare before opening their mouth, under penalty of looking like an idiot. A tattoo should have personal meaning. Its on your own skin, after all. That’s why I wouldn’t get straight up words on my skin. I’d be afraid that someone else would get the same words but without the personal meaning and dilute the value of my own ink.The irony of making the phrase “to each his own” very literally your own is delicious, and I love it.

I dont usually post tattoos but this one is so vibrant and unique. I love being different and could appreciate the decision to make the phrase a little different to more fully express oneself. Dont let the world tell you what you’re doing right or wrong. Find it from within and be yourself fully in every way :)
